Black Desert names

Black Desert

Classification: Official game name and FishyStuff’s preferred English name.

Recognized names:

  • Black Desert Online is the recognized English long-form alias.
  • BDO is the community abbreviation commonly used in discussions, links, and tool names.
  • 검은사막 is the official Korean title and the name FishyStuff uses in Korean UI and metadata.

Pearl Abyss leads with the shorter name in its English branding, so FishyStuff does the same in page titles and copy.

Fishing stats and progression

Life Skill

Classification: Official in-game system term.

Life Skills are Black Desert’s non-combat progression systems; Fishing is one of them. Fishing exposes three related values on FishyStuff: Fishing Level, Fishing Life Skill rank, and Fishing Mastery.

Fishing Level

Classification: Official in-game stat; FishyStuff calculator input.

Fishing Level is the 0–5 stat shown in the character profile and used to shorten bite time. FishyStuff’s current calculator applies reductions of 15%, 30%, 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50% for values 0 through 5, together with the zone’s base bite time and resource-abundance factor.

Fishing Life Skill rank

Classification: Official progression concept; descriptive FishyStuff label.

Accepted short forms: Fishing rank or Life Skill rank when the fishing context is already clear.

Fishing Life Skill rank is the Beginner-to-Guru progression advanced by Fishing EXP, with numbered levels inside each rank. The progression runs through Beginner, Apprentice, Skilled, Professional, Artisan, Master, and Guru. FishyStuff uses it for rank-dependent mechanics, including the Life Skill DRR component defined in the DRR entry below.

Fishing Mastery

Classification: Official in-game stat.

Accepted short form: Mastery when the fishing context is explicit.

Fishing Mastery is a numeric Fishing setup stat gained through progression, equipment, and buffs. FishyStuff applies the selected value through the calculator’s Prize-group curve. At the default of 2,500 Mastery, that curve adds 56,250 Prize raw weight; the calculator obtains the final modeled Prize share by normalizing it with the other active group weights. EXP and XP

Classification: Official-style abbreviation (EXP) and common community abbreviation (XP) for experience points.

EXP and XP mean experience points. Fishing EXP advances Fishing Life Skill rank; Life Skill EXP, character EXP, and Totem EXP are named separately when FishyStuff presents them. FishyStuff labels the value as EXP; players also commonly use XP.

Common abbreviations

AFR

Classification: Community abbreviation.

Expanded form: Auto-Fishing Time Reduction.

AFR shortens the automatic wait after a fish bites. The authoritative unreduced wait is 180 seconds, and the authoritative minimum auto-fishing time is 60 seconds. Those two values define a maximum effective reduction of 120 seconds, or 2/3 (approximately 66.67%):

(180 s − 60 s) ÷ 180 s = 120 ÷ 180 = 2/3 ≈ 66.67%

Item AFR bonuses add together, while only the highest active pet AFR applies; FishyStuff then enforces the 60-second minimum. Bite time and catch animations are separate parts of the full fishing cycle. See the AFR setup guide.

DRR

Classification: Community abbreviation for an official effect name.

Expanded form: Durability Reduction Resistance.

DRR lowers the chance that a cast consumes durability on the equipped rod, chair, and float. FishyStuff models two components:

  • Item DRR combines the compatible equipment and pet bonuses selected in the calculator.
  • Life Skill DRR is 0% for the untrained level-0 state. Trained levels provide 10% plus 0.5 percentage points per progression level, capped at 60% at Guru 20.

The model multiplies the remaining Item DRR and Life Skill DRR chances. A branded item adds a 0.5 brand factor; an unbranded item uses 1:

consume chance = brand factor × (1 − item DRR) × (1 − Life Skill DRR)

The maximum modeled Item DRR is 91%. Together with the 60% Life Skill DRR cap, it produces a 3.6% consumption chance; branding the item halves that item’s chance to 1.8%. See the DRR guide.

TFR

Classification: Community abbreviation for an official item name.

Expanded form: Triple-Float Fishing Rod.

Accepted plural: TFRs.

A Triple-Float Fishing Rod can return 1–4 fish per cast; FishyStuff’s current model uses an average of 1.6 fish per cast. The standard TFR is non-repairable, so DRR materially extends its usable life. The repeatable Fish for Villagers quest currently awards three rods on a three-day cooldown. Fishing zones and assignment

Fishing zone

Classification: FishyStuff domain term based on maintained fishing-map data.

Accepted short form: Zone when the fishing context is explicit.

A fishing zone is a versioned map area assigned one fishing-zone identity. That identity connects selected locations to the zone’s fishing structure, loot facts, and presence evidence; one identity can cover multiple disconnected areas in the mask. World regions, Region Groups, game service regions, seagull hotspots, and player-chosen fishing spots are separate map concepts with their own sources.

Zone assignment

Classification: FishyStuff domain term.

Zone assignment samples a world XZ point against an exact zone-layer revision and returns the fishing-zone identity stored there. FishyStuff uses this result for selected map locations and zone-scoped data. Ranking-ring attribution separately records every zone touched by a ranking observation’s uncertainty area.

Zone masks and Zone RGB

Zone mask

Classification: FishyStuff/source-data term.

A zone mask is the revisioned top-down field that stores a fishing-zone identity at each covered world XZ position. FishyStuff converts a map location to a mask pixel and samples that pixel to perform zone assignment. The exact mask content hash identifies the source revision used for the result.

Zone RGB

Classification: FishyStuff data identifier inherited from the zone-mask source.

Accepted forms: Zone RGB, RGB key, or an R,G,B value when the context is explicit.

Zone RGB is the three-channel key stored in the zone mask for one fishing-zone identity, written as an R,G,B triplet. FishyStuff uses the triplet to connect mask pixels, fishing-zone records, API results, and evidence indexes; map styling is selected separately.

Community depth labels

Community depth label

Classification: Community-maintained naming label.

Accepted short form: Depth when it appears inside a fishing-zone name, such as “Valencia Sea – Depth 5.”

A community depth label is a numbered suffix in a maintained zone name, such as “Valencia Sea – Depth 5.” Each Depth is a separate fishing zone with its own loot table. In the current maintained map convention, numbers generally increase farther from shore, and higher Depths generally improve the Rare-group chance.

Seagull hotspots

Seagull hotspot

Classification: Community player term for a Black Desert fishing feature.

Accepted short form: Hotspot when the fishing context is unambiguous.

A seagull hotspot is a temporary ocean fishing occurrence shown in-game by circling seagulls and a pool of fish. An active hotspot yields its named Rare fish and appears within a hotspot spawn area. Hotspot visibility and catchability depend on the character’s Fishing Life Skill rank. The map filters hotspots using the active Fishing Life Skill rank, and MaoMaoPrince’s TFR quest guide records the relevant rank for each quest-fish hotspot.

Hotspot spawn area

Classification: Community-maintained spatial term used by FishyStuff.

Accepted aliases: Hotspot boundary or spawn boundary when the source uses that meaning.

A hotspot spawn area maps where a named seagull hotspot can appear. FishyStuff’s Hotspots layer shows these areas with their associated fish and spawn details; a live in-game observation establishes whether an instance is currently active on a channel.

Fishing spot

Classification: Community term.

A fishing spot is a player-chosen point or small area used for a session, bookmark, or recommendation. FishyStuff can describe it by coordinates and attach its fishing-zone, nearby-hotspot, waypoint, and evidence context.

World regions, Nodes, trade origins, and resources

World region

Classification: Source-derived game-world term.

Accepted short form: Region when the world-map context is explicit.

A world region is a named area of the game world. In Node terms, the region area describes a Node’s territory; when the region carries a Region Node waypoint, that point marks the Node itself. The in-game minimap displays the character’s current region name and updates Affiliated Node as a separate label.

Node

Classification: Official game-world term.

A Node is a named point used for exploration and the Node network. FishyStuff labels a world region’s own waypoint Region Node and uses those points for the Nodes layer and its network connections.

Waypoint

Classification: Source-derived game-world term.

A waypoint is a named map point used for location and navigation.

Affiliated Node

Classification: Official in-game minimap label.

The minimap displays Affiliated Node as a separate label below the current region. It names the exploration Node affiliated with the character’s current location and updates separately from the region label. FishyStuff shows the same location relationship as an Affiliated Node fact; it can differ from the region’s Region Node.

Trade origin

Classification: Official trade-item concept; source-derived FishyStuff map relationship.

Accepted fishing form: Fish origin when the trade-item context is explicit.

Trade origin is the origin region associated with a trade item and used for trade-distance calculations. Black Desert assigns a caught fish’s origin from the world region at the actual catch position. On the FishyStuff map, the selected world position represents that catch position; the map identifies its world region, follows the region’s trade-origin relationship, and shows the origin region. An origin Node is also shown when that origin region has its own waypoint.

Region Group

Classification: Source-derived game-data term.

Accepted identifier form: RG followed by the numeric group ID, such as RG295.

A Region Group combines one or more world regions under one shared set of server-provided productivity values. The world map plots that group’s Territory Resource Information, including Fishing Resources, at its resource marker. FishyStuff outlines the shared area and identifies it by its RG number, such as RG295.

Territory Resource Information

Classification: Official in-game world-map display.

Accepted short forms: Resource Information or Resource Bar.

Territory Resource Information is the in-game world-map graph of a Region Group’s latest server-provided productivity values, shown at that group’s marker.

Fishing Resources

Classification: Official in-game productivity value; FishyStuff calculator input.

Accepted forms: Fishing resource abundance, or Resource abundance when the fishing context is explicit.

Fishing Resources is the regional productivity value used by fishing. The fishing widget finds the world region containing the character’s current position, then displays the latest server-provided Fishing Resources value for that region’s Region Group. The character’s position determines which shared value is shown.

The current English display uses four bands, which FishyStuff labels with the same boundaries:

  • Abundant: 71–100%
  • Average: 46–70%
  • Low: 15–45%
  • Exhausted: 0–14%

Game service region

Classification: Official service concept and FishyStuff preference label.

Examples: North America (NA), Europe (EU), and Korea (KR).

A game service region identifies the live service and data population and controls region-specific data and defaults. FishyStuff writes the player-facing label in full, such as North America (NA), to distinguish this account-and-data choice from world geography; source protocols may group services under identifiers such as NAEU.

Territory pane

Classification: FishyStuff interface term.

Territory is the FishyStuff Map pane that summarizes world-map context at the selected point. It presents the containing Region, its Region Node and Affiliated Node when assigned, the Trade Origin, an optional Origin Node waypoint, and available Region Group resource context. Live productivity remains a server-provided in-game snapshot; FishyStuff currently presents the Region Group area and map-marker context.

Fishing loot tables

Fishing loot table

Classification: Official/community concept projected through the FishyStuff domain model.

Accepted short form: Loot table when the fishing context is explicit.

A fishing loot table is the structured set of possible outcomes for one fishing source selection, condition set, and source revision. A source selection is a zone plus Rod or Harpoon, or a specific seagull hotspot when that source is supported. FishyStuff evaluates it in two stages: select a loot group, then select an item within that group. Every row retains its typed state and provenance so current, historical, and incomplete source facts remain explicit.

Loot groups and item grades

Fishing loot group

Classification: FishyStuff domain projection of fishing structure.

Accepted short forms: Loot group or group when the fishing context is explicit.

A fishing loot group is a top-level selection branch used across fishing. A zone’s rod table has five positional slots: Prize, Rare, High-Quality, General, and Trash. The slot itself owns that role; it is not a separately sourced identity claim. A zone’s harpoon table comes from its separate Harpoon target. Seagull hotspots use their own selected hotspot and FishingGroupKey, not the selected zone’s rod table. Each group has a share plus independently sourced item memberships and within-group allocations; an item may belong to more than one group when the source establishes multiple assignments.

Item grade

Classification: Official/source-derived item attribute.

Accepted short form: Grade.

Item grade is Black Desert’s display or rarity category for an item. FishyStuff uses it for presentation and sorting, while fishing-group membership remains a separate source fact.

Rates and weights

Raw weight

Classification: FishyStuff domain/data term.

A raw weight is a non-negative relative input used to divide the probability left after fixed shares. Within one active scope, a weight of 2 receives twice the remaining share of a weight of 1:

allocated share = remaining share × entry weight ÷ sum of positive active weights

Denormalized weight

Classification: FishyStuff presentation and authoring term.

Accepted UI label: Denormalized.

Denormalized weight presents the same raw weight on a compact percentage-shaped scale: raw weight ÷ 10,000, displayed with %. A raw weight of 25,000 therefore displays as 2.5%; edits continue through raw-weight allocation semantics.

Normalized share

Classification: FishyStuff domain term.

Accepted UI label: Normalized.

A normalized share is the final allocated percentage within its named scope after fixed shares and weights are resolved. A top-level group share is measured across active groups; an item share is measured within one exact zone-item-group assignment. In the Data editor, a Normalized edit authors that fixed final share directly. On a group such as Prize, the fixed share shadows raw-weight modifiers such as Fishing Mastery; the editor reports those shadowed bonuses.

Modeled probability

Classification: FishyStuff analytical term.

A modeled probability is a calculated chance for a named outcome under a defined zone, fishing mode, setup, conditions, source revision, and model version. A whole-zone item probability, for example, combines group selection with within-group item selection.

Observed catch rate

Classification: FishyStuff evidence term.

An observed catch rate is the number of recorded target outcomes divided by the eligible controlled catches in a stated sample. Its scope records setup, location, fishing mode, time window, game revision, and sample definition so comparisons use equivalent conditions.

Presence support and provenance

Presence support

Classification: FishyStuff evidence term.

Presence support collects provenance-aware evidence that an item occurs in a fishing zone. It exposes evidence class, time or revision, and spatial attribution quality so FishyStuff can distinguish strong or recent, historical, reference-only, curated, weak, insufficient, and unknown support. Loot group, rate, and location precision remain separate facts.

Provenance and source attribution

Classification: FishyStuff evidence terms.

Accepted short form: Provenance.

Provenance is the retained chain from a displayed claim back to its source family, source ID, revision, row or record, timestamp, and attribution model. Source attribution applies that chain to one specific claim and scope.

Ranking observations

Ranking observation

Classification: FishyStuff evidence term derived from ranking data.

A ranking observation records that a fish appeared in the ranking input at a timestamp together with the sampled player position. FishyStuff stores the event independently of map revisions, uses it as positive presence evidence, and attributes its player-position ring against each selected zone-layer revision. Game-recorded catch positions, loot groups, and rates use separate evidence paths.

Ranking rings and attribution

Ranking ring

Classification: FishyStuff spatial-evidence term.

Accepted alias: Player-position ring.

A ranking ring is the fixed-radius uncertainty ring centered on the recorded player position. The ranking attribution model uses a radius of 500 game units, and every fishing zone touched by the ring receives positive presence support.

Full containment

Classification: FishyStuff ranking-attribution state.

Accepted UI phrase: Contained ranking ring.

Full containment means the ranking ring touches exactly one Zone RGB under the selected mask revision. That zone receives the stronger contained-ring spatial attribution.

Partial intersection

Classification: FishyStuff ranking-attribution state.

Accepted UI phrase: Partial ranking ring.

Partial intersection means the ranking ring touches multiple Zone RGB values. Every touched zone receives positive support with the weaker boundary-intersection attribution.

Ranking evidence share

Classification: FishyStuff ranking diagnostic.

Ranking evidence share is the proportion of weighted ranking evidence assigned to each fish within a stated query and model scope. The named model may include recency weighting, effort adjustment, or a prior; the result describes the distribution of ranking evidence.

Known, unknown, unavailable, and absent

Known zero

Classification: FishyStuff typed data state.

Known zero is a source- or model-established numeric value of exactly zero. Calculations retain it as zero and the interface displays it as a known value.

Unknown

Classification: FishyStuff typed data state.

Unknown means the current source and inputs do not establish a value. The interface displays Unknown until suitable evidence resolves it; an empty evidence search normally leaves presence unknown or insufficient.

Unavailable

Classification: FishyStuff typed data state.

Unavailable means the current calculation or conversion cannot produce a value and records the reason, such as a missing source fact, an unsupported source variant, or no exact equivalent raw weight.

Absent

Classification: FishyStuff typed presence state.

Absent is an explicit presence fact asserting that an item does not occur in the stated zone and source scope. It is established by a retained absence claim rather than by an empty evidence search.

Catch evidence and selection rates

These terms distinguish direct, dated catch observations from broad location reports, and distinguish each stage of fishing-loot selection from the final probability of an item.

Recorded catch evidence

Classification: FishyStuff evidence term.

Recorded catch evidence ties a named fish to an in-game position and timestamp captured for an actual catch. In plain language, it records: “this fish was caught here—or within this stated distance—at this time.” Player reports and zone-level location statements establish an area without preserving an individual catch sample. Each record identifies whether its point is the catch position, the player’s position, or another observation position.

Game-recorded catch location

Classification: FishyStuff spatial-evidence term.

A game-recorded catch location is the in-game XZ position captured for the catch itself. Earlier fishing maps represented fish locations through their own zones, with varying spatial accuracy, rather than individual catch samples. FishyStuff can compare each recorded coordinate directly with the applicable zone-mask revision and determine which fishing zone contained the catch point.

Drop rate

Classification: Community umbrella term projected through the FishyStuff domain model.

Drop rate is an informal umbrella name for a loot selection probability. FishyStuff names the specific rate whenever possible: group selection probability is the chance of selecting a top-level fishing loot group; within-group item rate is the chance of selecting an item after that group has been selected; and overall item selection probability is the item’s chance per fishing outcome across every active group that can produce it.

For one item-group assignment, that group’s contribution to the total item probability is:

group selection probability × within-group item rate

When the same item belongs to several active groups, its overall probability combines those group contributions. Raw and denormalized weights allocate probability before normalization; the resulting selection shares are the rates.
